MrMiller's BLOG: Wait for the Whistle

Starting 'em Young

Listening to others tell stories about their kids is pretty boring, I know. But trust me, this one's different. (At least I think so!)

A couple of weeks ago, I was watching the Blackhawks game with Son #2 on my lap. During the game I would clap his hands together three times while saying "Let's Go Hawks!" (as opposed to the incorrect "Let's Go Blackhawks!" followed by five claps). He was happy and smiling, but that was about it. Until last Saturday.

As I'm watching the Pens/Hawks game on WGN I hear the little guy in the other room playing and making his usual random sounds when I realized that they weren't random at all. He was chanting "Let's Go Hawks!".

I called him in the room where he immediately looked at the TV, pointed, and said, in his own way of course, "Let's Go Hawks!" He even clapped his hands!

(Of course, during the Bears game Sunday afternoon he also pointed at the TV and said "Let's Go Hawks!". Hey. The kid's a year and half. Cut him some slack.)

Could a parent be more proud? Is there any better proof of a child being raised with the highest morals and standards? I think not.

As Pierre Pilote as my witness, I pledge to continue to raise my boys to be the best Blackhawk fans that they can be.

  • They will wait for the whistle.
  • They will not condone a chicken as a mascot.
  • The storied history of the franchise will not begin with the star of the 2015 team.
  • They will scoff at the "W" flag.
  • Cheering the ice crew is certainly acceptable. (Afterall, they're just young women trying to work their way through school.)
  • And in addition to Thomas the Train and Curious George, their book shelf will have the most current Media Guide available as a reference.

At four months, he attended his first Blackhawks game. At age 18-months, he says "Let's Go Hawks". Perhaps by Christmas, my wish will come true and he'll start up with his first "Detroit Sucks" chant.
