Was it worth it?
Posted on June 10, 2010

Perhaps it's too soon to ask being that Toews, Keith, Seabrook, Kane and the rest of the Blackhawks skated around the Wachovia Center with the Stanley Cup just last night. In some cases, the tears of joy haven't dried up and mere thought of asking yourself Did it really happen? causes the waterworks to turn on once again.

So was it worth it?

And by that I refer to the common proclamations heard by sports fans all over the world often making personal claims and sacrifices to an unknown being with the hopes that their team wins it all.

Some guys offer up their left nut. Others say they'd give up their first born. Some claim they'll go to church every Sunday for the rest of their lives. Still others might even claim to quit drinking.

...if only their team would win the championship.

Last night the Blackhawks did, in fact, win the Stanley Cup. So again, was it worth it?

Having the franchise hire a chicken for a mascot? Enduring those games when 9k in the stands was a "decent crowd"? The "W" flag? The dolt who now brings in an air horn to the UC? The plastic trumpet player? Blackhawk buckets? And yes, the immature college chants at the opposing goalie after a 'Hawks score?

What is worth it?

The annual 20% ticket increases by McEgo? The celebrity ass kissing? The guy sitting next to you on his laptop doing God/Allah/Buddha/Elvis knows what while the Blackhawks charge up the ice on a 3-on-2 break? The notion of going to the circus at the UC with one of the side-shows being a Blackhawks/Stars game?

Was it worth it?

Looking back at last night, the past few years, and even the past couple of decades ... yeah. It was worth it.

Most fans would easily put up with the head-scratching distractions for the chance to attend Friday's parade. True fans would have no problem downing a bottle of Tylenol to rid themselves of the headache caused by Tommy Hawks' $2.99 drum from Walmart. I have no doubt guys from the BHZ message boards would happily be on the "Kiss Cam" for a chance to see Lord Stanley's Cup etched with the names of Dustin Byfuglien, Niklas Hjalmarsson, and head coach Joel Quenneville.

Yeah. It was worth it.

But for the record, now that all these embarrassing sacrifices have been made and the complete selling out of the organization has taken place, it's time to bring a bit of normalcy back to Blackhawk Hockey and put the focus back on the guys on the ice. If that means ending that god-awful Black Forest "He Shoots He Scores" promotion on the jumbotron, so be it.

Oh. And for the record, I wouldn't have given up my first born to see the Cup raised last night. And to be honest, I wouldn't have gone to church every Sunday for the next 30+ years. Quit drinking? Hah! Good one.

Although now that I think about it, I'm not so sure I even need my left nut anymore so at the very least I have a bargaining chip with God for next season...
