The 2009 Preseason
Posted on September 16, 2009

Blackhawks prospect Goalie Joe FallonCan someone tell me why fans get so excited over preseason, well, anything? Other than signaling that the real season is close at hand, the preseason is about as meaningful as a promise to call that one-night stand from last weekend.

I guess if the battle for the back-up goalie spot is high on your interest list, then you're probably paying close attention to the happenings at Johnny's Ice House. Otherwise, the roster's set and the remaining 30 players are trying out for the Rockford Ice Hogs.

Which, of course, brings up another beef with the preseason: fans are expected to pay full price to watch these minor league tryouts. It's nearly unfathomable to think that McEgo and company will be charging fans anywhere from $25 to $355 to watch the likes of Joe Fallon, David Gilbert, and Teigan Zhan battle for non-existent spots on the roster.

Even a bunch of $6.00 beers won't make that worth it.

RK reported that on day 1 of training camp, defenseman Brent Sopel was "outstanding"; on day 3 Sopel "continued to impress". He's 7th on the depth chart making $2.5 million. At best, he moves up to #6.

My Goal: to contain my excitement.

Perhaps the biggest question is how the team will react and adjust to Marian Hossa's absence until, hopefully, December. Who will step up on offense? Who fills the spot on the power play? And who will have the biggest regrets in the choice of Hossa over Havlat?

October 2 is when it all matters. Until then, enjoy the nice weather, spend time with your family and be sure you've called your cable provider to complain why you can't get Versus.
